Experiences with Betrayal Trauma and the Healthcare System

We have been working on a paper using information from Canadians on their experiences with betrayal trauma and the healthcare system. Our results so far show that people who have experienced a betrayal trauma, such as being attacked by someone they are close to, are likely to have less trust in physicians and the medical profession. These individuals are also less likely to have a secure attachment style, which means that they are more likely to view themselves or others negatively in relationships. This makes sense, since betrayal trauma is trauma that occurs in close relationships. People who have experienced betrayal trauma also have symptoms of post-traumatic stress and depression. The relationship between experiencing a betrayal trauma and having less trust in physicians and the medical profession may be due to having symptoms of post-traumatic stress and an insecure attachment style. Final results from this study will be shared in the future.
